REDIRECTED TEXAS Parent Taught Drivers Education Course - PTDE 101

Parent taught drivers education course 101 is the model course that was developed by Texas Department of Education and it replaces the state-adopted drivers education textbook. The student must complete a minimum of 30 (32 for Texas) hours of drivers ed, and achieve a score of 90 or more to qualify for a completion certificate.

What You Need To Know About Getting Your Texas Drivers Permit:

Steps To Getting Your Permit (Phase 1)
  • Enroll in our course - it's easy, and will only take a few minutes
  • Your parents also need to apply with the DPS in order to qualify to teach you the course – more on Parent's Page.
  • Complete the first 6 hours of the course - once you've completed the first portion, we'll send you an e-mail letting you know it's time to go to the DPS and apply for your Texas Driver Permit.
  • Finish the second part of the course (26 hours) - at this point, you can start driving with you parents and logging your hours. You'll need 7 hours of in-car training and 7 hours of behind- the-wheel practice.
  • Pass the final and get your Certificate - you're guaranteed to pass, which means you can take the final as many times as you need to until you get a passing score!

What's Next? (Phase 2)
After you've completed our Texas Drivers Education course, passed the final, and received your Certificate, you must have your Texas Driver Learner Permit for a period of 6 consecutive months without it having been suspended/revoked, and you must be at least 16 years old, in order to apply for your Provisional License. You may only apply for your license when all of the Texas Driver Permit Requirements have been fulfilled.

Parents - What You'll Need To Do

Just like your teen registers for our Texas Driver Education course, you'll need to complete a form during the sign-up process and submit it to the DPS. There is a $20 fee, and the fee and form will need to be submitted for each teen that will completing the Texas Driver Education course. Once the DPS has received your form and payment, you will receive a driver education packet in 2-3 weeks.

Make Sure You're Qualified

In order to teach Parent-Taught Driver Education 101 in Texas, you:
  • Must be the student's parent, step-parent, grandparent, step-grandparent, foster parent or legal guardian appointed by a court.
  • Must have had a valid Texas driver license for the last 3 years
  • Cannot have a conviction (including a probated sentence) of criminally negligent homicide or driving while intoxicated.
  • Must not have had your driving privileges suspended, revoked or forfeited for traffic related violations in the past 3 years.
  • According to the DPS, it is your responsibility to check your records prior to submitting your form.
